About houses of tradition
The Hiše s tradicijo in Slovenia are distinguished for their tradition and character, which has been impressed to them by their former owners. Their traditional ambience and homeliness blend into a touch of romanticism. The quality accommodation is complemented by a carefully preserved natural environment as well as by the healthy, varied gastronomy based on home produce which is cultivated with love. These houses invite visitors to try a different, richer holiday experience in a unique atmosphere.
The tradition of a building is reflected trough its architecture and decoration, but above all through the personal contact with the host family. The host can prepare a traditional dinner on request, and always pleased to explain the main features and past history of both the house and the locality it is situated in. Besides this, a guest can enjoy and relax in the quiet surroundings, visit natural sights which are plentiful in Slovenia, get acquainted with the cultural heritage and gastronomy of the region, taste the excellent Slovenian wines or choose from one of the many options for outdoor leisure activities, such as cycling, horse-back riding, golf, alpine and cross-country skiing, swimming, hiking, fishing…
The Hiše s tradicijo are classified into three categories, where the traditional distinctiveness in architecture, furniture, customs and gastronomy is taken into consideration. The category is not influenced by the various types of building:
A: Castles, Mansions, Manors
B: Country estate houses and Bourgeois houses
C: Plain rural buildings
The fulfilment of requirements set for the III. - the lowest category is a fundamental condition for the building to be included in the network Hiše s tradicijo and the basis for awarding the symbol of specialization Hiša s tradicijo.

Castles
, in the narrower sense of the word, are fortified premises of feudal lords, situated on secured sites. In Slovenia they originated from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 16th century, whereas in the 17th century they were already built only as an exception.
Mansions
are unfortified noble buildings, made of stone, usually characterised by an agreeable position, geometrically accurate layout and an emphasised residential comfort. The architectural defence elements (small corner towers, console cornices, loop-holes and merlons) play a strictly decorative role. They were already built in the late Middle Ages, whereas from the 16th century on they present a prevailing type of the construction architecture.
Manors
are stone-made seigniorial buildings, mainly built in towns.

Country estate homes
are preserved whole architectural or urbanistic complexes, which presented or still present the centre of an estate. They consist of residential and farm buildings. An eventual croft (belonging immediate surroundings) is to be maintained in a traditional way.
Bourgeois houses
mainly present individual houses or group of residential buildings, built for the better-off town residents before World War II. The autonomous buildings are to have gardens, maintained according to their original layout. By way of exception younger buildings may also be classified among the bourgeois houses, if they are built to the plans of well-known architects (ex. Plečnik, Mihevc) and their primary arrangement is preserved.

Plain rural buildings
are individual farm and residential buildings. They may have been built as autonomous buildings or just preserved as such, although originally they were a part of a bigger farm complex. More than for their architecture they are characterised by their former or current functions (mills, saws, haylofts, stables, wine cellars, tollhouses, posting stages, inns, etc.).
